With thousands of horses in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, horse-related injuries are a significant local risk.
Equestrian activities account for thousands of hospitalisations annually in Australia, with the 15–19 age group experiencing the highest rates.
The "Crush and Kick" Reality
Equine incidents are often high-energy trauma events. Common injuries include:
Head and Spinal Trauma: 56% of fatal horse-related incidents result from falls, 96% involve blunt force trauma.
Crush Injuries: Being pinned or stepped on by a 500kg animal can lead to internal bleeding and life-threatening "crush syndrome".
Complex Scene Safety: In Mundijong, your first life-saving action is managing the horse. You cannot help a casualty if the animal is still panicked or the area is unstable.
Approximately 97% of the Shire is declared bushfire prone.
For Mundijong residents, bushfire readiness is a year-round necessity.
Smoke Inhalation and Respiratory Care
Bushfire smoke can severely aggravate heart and lung conditions.
If someone is struggling to breathe:
Move them to clean air immediately and assist with prescribed inhalers.
Seek medical help if they experience persistent coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness.
Heat-Related Illnesses
Mundijong’s outdoor workers, farmers, and riders are at high risk for heatstroke.
Cool First, Then Hydrate: Aggressive cooling is the priority for heatstroke.
Move the person to shade, remove excess clothing, and apply ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin.
Never Give Fluids to the Unconscious: If a person is not alert, do not attempt to give them water, as this creates a choking hazard.
In a peri-rural area like Mundijong, the "Golden Hour" of emergency medicine is critical.
While Mundijong is serviced by local emergency units, the distance from major trauma hospitals means your initial first aid can be the difference between recovery and permanent injury.
Mundijong Locals, to meet these specific risks, we recommend:
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: The essential baseline for every property owner.
HLTAID013 Remote and Isolated First Aid: Designed for those who may need to manage a casualty for extended periods.
HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid: Essential for safety officers in the equine and agricultural sectors.
Britt Brennan, founder of REACHAU, focuses on the "why" behind every skill. We don't just teach you how to apply a bandage; we teach you how to manage a high-pressure scene at a local stable or during a bushfire emergency.

As the founder, I, Britt Brennan, honour the journey that brought my family to the Keerup (Kirup) region in the 1850s and the personal growth I experienced living and working in Nullagine (Biybara/Pilbara) as a young adult.
Now, with my family living on Whadjuk Noongar Country - from Jandakot, the land of the Whistling Eagle, to Mundijong, meaning "red-tailed black cockatoo"
I remain deeply grateful to walk and work on this land.
