Site-Compliant First Aid for
the North West

The Pilbara and Kimberley operate under conditions that most first aid training does not account for: extreme heat, remote access, psychosocial pressure on shift workers, and the compliance requirements of Tier 1 mining operations. REACHAU delivers training built around those realities, on-site, at short notice, and to the qualification standards your site requires.

Short-Notice Training Is a Real Option

One of the most consistent pain points for mining, gas, and resource sector businesses in the North West is last-minute compliance requirements. A crew is mobilising for a fly-in fly-out rotation and the paperwork flags a gap. A site audit is scheduled and certifications are out of date. A new contract requires updated first aid coverage before start date.

If you have a genuine short-notice requirement, call before you assume it cannot be done. Where it is feasible, Britt can get on a plane and come to your site, or drive to a regional location at short notice to fill the gap. Not every request can be accommodated, but many can. Contact Britt directly on 0481 123 204 or at [email protected] to discuss what is needed and what is possible.

The North West Operating Environment

The Pilbara and Kimberley sit at the intersection of industrial scale and genuine remoteness. Mine sites and gas operations run around the clock with large numbers of workers, yet the nearest major hospital may be hours away and conditions on-site can turn a manageable incident into a critical one within minutes. Community-based settings in the Kimberley face a different challenge: small populations, limited health infrastructure, and environmental hazards that are absent from standard first aid curricula. Training in this region needs to account for the heat, the distance, the industry, and in many cases the cultural context.

Karratha / Roebourne
RFDS + 20 min
Karratha has a regional hospital but serious trauma or cardiac events requiring specialist intervention will require RFDS transfer to Perth. Mine sites and gas facilities nearby operate with first aiders as the first response before any crew arrives.
Newman / Tom Price
RFDS only
Inland Pilbara iron ore country. Newman has a hospital but many mine sites are further out again. Serious incidents require RFDS coordination. In 40 to 48 degree heat, a deteriorating casualty cannot wait. The first aider on-site has a narrow window.
Port Hedland
Hospital on-site
Port Hedland has a regional hospital. However, offshore gas and outer coastal operations still face significant response delays. Mine site first aiders remain the critical first link in the chain before any external response is possible.
Broome / Derby / Fitzroy
2 to 6+ hrs
Broome has hospital services but Derby and Fitzroy Crossing communities rely heavily on the RFDS. During the wet season, road access is cut and air is the only option. Community-based first aiders carry responsibility well beyond standard expectations.
Kununurra / East Kimberley
RFDS + transfers
East Kimberley has a hospital in Kununurra, but remote community and pastoral station access is variable. Tropical disease risks and road trauma from unsealed travel add to the clinical complexity of incidents in this area.

Response times are indicative only. Actual times depend on RFDS availability, weather, road conditions, and exact site location. On-site first aiders are the primary response in every case until professional help arrives.

Heat Stress and Heatstroke: The Pilbara's Most Underestimated Risk

Ambient temperatures of 40 to 48 degrees Celsius are routine in the Pilbara throughout the summer period. At these temperatures, the margin between heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke can close within 30 minutes if a worker is not removed from the environment. Heat exhaustion presents with heavy sweating, pale and clammy skin, nausea, weakness, and a rapid but weak pulse. The person remains conscious and responsive. Heatstroke is a medical emergency: the skin is hot and may be dry, the person may become confused or unconscious, and core body temperature may exceed 40 degrees. Heatstroke requires immediate cooling and emergency evacuation. The difference matters because the management is different. REACHAU training for Pilbara workplaces covers heat illness recognition, cooling protocols, and the indicators that require immediate 000 activation. Knowing which condition you are looking at is not a minor detail. It is the decision that determines the outcome.

Psychosocial Safety on Site: A 2026 Compliance Priority

Safe Work Australia's psychosocial hazard regulations came into full effect across Australian workplaces in 2024 and 2025, with compliance enforcement a growing priority in 2026. For FIFO operations, the risk profile is well documented: extended roster cycles, isolation from family and community, disrupted sleep, and the accumulation of shift fatigue create conditions where mental health incidents are a genuine on-site risk. First aiders on FIFO operations are often the first contact point for a colleague in distress, well before any formal support structure is reached. Mental Health First Aid training provides site workers with the skills to recognise early signs of mental health deterioration, to have a conversation that does not make the situation worse, and to connect a colleague with appropriate support. This is not clinical training. It is the practical ability to respond usefully when someone on your crew is not coping. Contact Britt to discuss Mental Health First Aid delivery for your FIFO operation or shift-based site.

๐Ÿค

Kimberley Communities: Cultural Competence and Environmental Risk

Delivering first aid training in Kimberley communities requires more than transporting a metropolitan curriculum north. The communities REACHAU works with in this region include diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups whose relationships with health care, hospitals, and emergency services carry significant cultural context. Effective training respects that context. It does not override it. On the environmental side, the Kimberley presents risks that are absent from standard curricula: Ross River fever, Murray Valley encephalitis, severe road trauma from extended unsealed driving, saltwater and freshwater crocodile awareness, and wet season isolation when roads are impassable for weeks. Training for Kimberley community health workers, remote staff, and pastoral operations needs to include these locally relevant risks. REACHAU can adapt course delivery to include locally relevant scenarios. Contact Britt to discuss what your community or operation needs.

First Aid by Industry Across the Pilbara and Kimberley

The North West encompasses some of the most high-value and high-risk industrial environments in Australia, alongside some of the most underserved remote communities. The right training depends on your sector, your site requirements, and the environment your people are working in.

โ›๏ธ

Tier 1 Mining: Iron Ore and Gold

HLTAID014 + UETDRMP010

Rio Tinto, BHP, FMG, and their contractor networks require site-compliant first aid qualifications that exceed the standard workplace minimum. HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid is the appropriate qualification for site first aiders, safety officers, and emergency response team members. Electrical contractors and maintenance crews working around high-voltage and low-voltage switchgear on mine sites require LVR (UETDRMP010) as a site access requirement. REACHAU delivers both qualifications to the standard your site requires.

โšก

Electrical Contractors and FIFO Sparkies

UETDRMP010 (LVR)

Low Voltage Rescue (UETDRMP010) is a mandatory site access requirement for licensed electricians working on the majority of Pilbara mine sites and gas facilities. The unit covers rescue of a person in contact with a live low-voltage panel, including safe approach, switching off supply, CPR, and use of a defibrillator. LVR must be renewed annually on most sites. REACHAU delivers UETDRMP010 as a standalone unit or in combination with HLTAID011 or HLTAID014 to meet full site compliance requirements.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ

Offshore Gas and LNG Operations

HLTAID014 + HLTAID013

Offshore gas platforms and LNG processing facilities operate in environments where emergency services cannot respond quickly. Onboard first aiders carry significant responsibility. HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid is the appropriate qualification for platform first aiders and offshore medical officers who are not otherwise clinically trained. HLTAID013 provides the extended casualty management and remote communication skills relevant to isolated offshore environments. Contact Britt to discuss qualification packages that meet your offshore operator's requirements.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

FIFO Shift Workers and Camp Personnel

HLTAID011 + Mental Health First Aid

All personnel on FIFO rotations should hold current HLTAID011 as a minimum. For camp supervisors, medics, and site safety officers, HLTAID014 is the appropriate upgrade. Psychosocial safety training, including Mental Health First Aid, is increasingly required as part of FIFO site inductions under Safe Work Australia's 2024 psychosocial hazard framework. Combining clinical first aid with mental health first aid gives FIFO crews the full range of response skills for the incidents that actually occur on site.

๐Ÿฅ

Indigenous Community Health Services

HLTAID011 + HLTAID013

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and community health workers in Kimberley communities carry front-line response responsibility in settings where the RFDS is the only backup. HLTAID011 provides the baseline and HLTAID013 provides the extended skills relevant to prolonged or RFDS-dependent events. Training delivery for community health settings can be adapted to include locally relevant scenarios, culturally appropriate facilitation approaches, and language considerations. Contact Britt to discuss what is appropriate for your community.

๐Ÿš—

Pastoral Stations and Remote Government

HLTAID013

Pastoral stations in the Kimberley can sit hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town. Government workers, environmental rangers, and research staff operating in remote Kimberley country face similar isolation to mine site workers but without the infrastructure of a large operation behind them. HLTAID013 is the appropriate minimum for anyone whose work takes them beyond reliable mobile coverage or more than 60 minutes from emergency services in this region. Wet season road closures can extend that isolation significantly.

"Site-compliant training is not about paperwork. It is about the person on your crew who knows what to do in the first ten minutes before anyone else gets there."

The Industrial Standard
Site-Compliant Training: What the Pilbara and Kimberley Require

Mining and gas operations in the North West have first aid compliance requirements that go beyond the standard Australian workplace minimum. HLTAID011 is the floor, not the ceiling, for most Tier 1 sites. What the Pilbara and Kimberley actually need is a combination of qualifications matched to the role: HLTAID014 for site first aiders and safety officers, LVR (UETDRMP010) for electrical contractors as a condition of site access, and HLTAID013 for anyone operating in areas where response times are genuinely extended. These are not upgrades to tick a box. They are the qualifications that reflect what you will actually face if something goes wrong on your site.

The following qualification combinations cover the most common site compliance requirements across North West operations. If your site or project has specific requirements not listed here, contact Britt to discuss a package that meets them.

HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid

The highest individual first aid qualification in the nationally recognised HLT training package. Required for site first aiders, emergency response team members, and safety officers on Tier 1 mining and gas operations.

UETDRMP010: Low Voltage Rescue

Mandatory site access requirement for licensed electricians on most Pilbara and Kimberley mine sites. Covers safe rescue from a live LV panel, CPR, and AED. Annual renewal required on the majority of sites.

HLTAID013: Remote and Isolated Sites

Extended casualty management, vital signs monitoring, aeromedical preparation, and remote communication for settings where professional help is significantly delayed. The appropriate baseline for offshore and deep remote operations.

HLTAID011: Provide First Aid

The standard workplace first aid qualification. Required for all on-site personnel as a minimum on most North West operations. Includes CPR, AED, severe bleeding, anaphylaxis, shock, and medical emergencies.

HLTAID009: CPR Annual Refresher

Annual CPR renewal for all on-site personnel. Most site induction requirements specify current CPR as a minimum. A fast, practical refresher that can be delivered to large groups on-site.

Mental Health First Aid

Practical skills for recognising and responding to mental health distress on-site. Relevant for FIFO supervisors, camp managers, and all personnel under Safe Work Australia's 2024 psychosocial safety framework.

Who needs site-compliant training in the North West

Electrical contractors working on Pilbara mine sites who require LVR renewal. Site first aiders and emergency response team members on Tier 1 mining and gas operations requiring HLTAID014. FIFO camp supervisors and safety officers managing psychosocial and physical health risks on rotating crews. Community health workers and remote government staff in Kimberley communities where RFDS is the only backup. Offshore gas platform personnel whose response window is determined by vessel or helicopter transit time. Anyone whose site induction paperwork flags a gap in current compliance.

Common Questions About First Aid in the North West

What first aid qualification do I need to work on a Pilbara mine site?

It depends on your role. All site personnel are generally required to hold current HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) and current HLTAID009 (Provide CPR) renewed annually. Licensed electricians and electrical contractors are additionally required to hold LVR (UETDRMP010), renewed annually, as a condition of site access on most Pilbara operations. Designated site first aiders and emergency response team members are typically required to hold HLTAID014 (Provide Advanced First Aid). Specific requirements vary by site and operator. Contact your site safety team to confirm what is required for your role, then contact Britt to arrange the relevant training.

Can REACHAU deliver training at short notice for a FIFO crew with a compliance gap?

In many cases, yes. Short-notice requirements are a common reality in the resource sector and REACHAU understands that compliance gaps do not always surface at convenient times. Where it is logistically feasible, Britt can fly to site or drive to a regional location at short notice to deliver the required training. Not every request can be accommodated, but the first step is a direct conversation. Call 0481 123 204 or email [email protected] and describe what you need, when you need it, and where the crew is. The answer will be honest and fast.

What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and why does it matter for first aid response?

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body's cooling system is working but struggling. The person sweats heavily, feels weak and nauseous, may vomit, and has cool, pale, clammy skin. They remain conscious and responsive. Management involves moving the person to a cool environment, removing excess clothing, applying cool wet cloths, and providing cool water to drink if conscious. Heat exhaustion can be managed on-site and the person usually recovers with rest and cooling. Heatstroke is a medical emergency. The core body temperature exceeds 40 degrees, the sweating mechanism may fail so the skin is hot and can be dry, and the person may become confused, aggressive, or lose consciousness. This requires immediate 000 activation and aggressive cooling while waiting for emergency services. The distinction matters because the management approaches are different and because failing to recognise heatstroke means a person who needed evacuation did not get it in time. These scenarios are covered in HLTAID011 and HLTAID014 training.

Does LVR (UETDRMP010) need to be renewed every year?

On most Pilbara and Kimberley mine sites and gas facilities, yes. The majority of site operators require annual LVR renewal as a condition of site access for licensed electricians. Some operators accept a two-year renewal cycle but annual is the most common requirement. REACHAU can deliver LVR as a standalone refresher or in combination with annual HLTAID009 CPR renewal to make the most of a single mobilisation for your crew. Contact Britt to schedule a group renewal on-site or at a regional location.

Can first aid training be adapted for delivery in Indigenous Kimberley communities?

Yes. REACHAU's approach to delivery in Kimberley communities takes into account that effective training in these settings requires more than transferring a standard curriculum. Delivery can be adapted to incorporate locally relevant scenarios, allow for different learning styles and pace, and be facilitated in a way that respects the cultural context of the community. The qualifications delivered are the same nationally recognised units, and outcomes are not compromised. What changes is how the training is facilitated and what scenarios are used as examples. Contact Britt directly to discuss what would be appropriate for your community or organisation.

What should a FIFO supervisor do if a crew member is showing signs of mental health distress on-site?

The immediate priority is to have a direct, calm, non-judgmental conversation with the person. Mental Health First Aid training provides the practical framework for this: how to approach the conversation, what to say and what not to say, how to listen without making the situation worse, and how to connect the person with appropriate support. A supervisor who has not had this training will often default to ignoring the signs or responding in ways that escalate the situation. The most important step is to take what you observe seriously, not minimise it, and act early. For on-site situations involving acute risk, contact your site medical officer or emergency services as appropriate. Contact Britt to discuss Mental Health First Aid delivery for your FIFO operation or crew.
